Tale of Two Phones

By now, the whole world knows about the iPhone, Apples first stab at the mobile phone business.

Not even on sale yet, the phone has stirred up a feeding frenzy in the press on the strength of Apples remarkable success with the iPod and Steve Jobs legendary marketing skills. Jobs, Apples chief executive, has promised a revolutionary product that will shake the industry, and most of us are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Of course, there are niggling details.

Like the iPod, the iPhone will have no replaceable battery. This may be acceptable on an MP3 player but less so on a cellphone. Also like the iPod, the iPhone is designed to be a closed system. At least in the beginning, there will be no third-party applications on the iPhone.

Almost the exact opposite is the Neo1973, a phone youve probably never even heard of, from a Taiwanese company called FIC, better known for making computers and PC motherboards.

Relative obscurity isnt the only thing that sets the Neo1973 apart, however.

Unlike the iPhone and most other mobile handsets in the market, the Neo1973 smart phone uses open source software developed on a platform called OpenMoko. In this sense, it is even more revolutionary than the iPhone.

For the first time, the mobile ecosystem will be as open as the PC, and mobile applications equally as diverse and more easily accessible, said Sean Moss-Pultz, architect of OpenMoko and a product manager at FIC. Ringtones are already a multi-billion dollar market. We think downloading mobile applications on an open platform will be even bigger.

These expectations are by no means a sure thing. Service providers, long accustomed to subsidizing phones that can be set to lock out their competitors, may not welcome an open source phone that anyone can hack.

The first fully supported OpenMoko phone, the Linux-based Neo1973 is expected to start shipping in March. Based on information available on the OpenMoko Web site (http://www.openmoko.com), the Neo1973 will be a touch-screen, quad-band GSM/GPRS phone with a Global Positioning System chip and Bluetooth built in, and sell for about $350. It will have no camera, but it will have a replaceable battery and a micro-SD slot for extra memory.

In the beginning, the Neo1973 is more likely to appeal to hackers and geeks, but the OpenMoko Team doesnt want to stop there. In a post on the OpenMoko list, Moss-Pultz expounds on the philosophy behind going open in a proprietary industry.

Mobile phones are closed environments created with a mobile context in mind, he writes. But this concept is limiting; a mobile phone has the potential to be a platform that can do anything that a small computer with broadband access can do. If mobile phones were based on open platforms, they would have the potential to bring computing to people in a ways traditional computers cannot. Mobile phones can become ubiquitous computers.

He also explains that the Neo1973 got its name from the year that Dr. Marty Cooper, the inventor of the mobile phone, made the first call. We believe that an open source mobile phone can revolutionize, once again, the world of communication, Moss-Pultz concludes. This will be the New 1973. Join us. Free Your Phone.

Nobody knows if OpenMoko will succeed, but right out of the gate, it sounds more revolutionary than yet another closed-system phone, even if it has the letter i in front of it.

Those Crazy Football Rules

While we wait the couple of weeks before the Super Bowl, we can chat about how Pittsburgh and Seattle taught everybody else how to play football.

Do you watch March Madness? The team that ends up with the trophy is the one that has the endurance. Some years ago, Utah was in the final game. They pooped out before the end of the first half to my utter disappointment having spent 8 years of my life at the University of Utah.

March Madness, of course is basketball. Football is the more rugged game which would have been explained and described by Charles Darwin if it were invented in his day. However, American football came from Rugby. Thats the game where all the players have had their teeth knocked out but still love the game. Only the most fit survive.

I loved football when I was a kid. My mother would not let me put on the high school football uniform with all of the pads, helmet, and other protective devices. Because of that, those of us non-players went to the church grounds and played on the lawn without any uniforms with the safety gear. Our season ended when everybodys knees had turned to mush from playing tackle (without knee pads) rather than touch football.

In Korea we played tackle football with no protective gear. We could only do this when we were back in reserve. We played as hard as we could. If we broke a leg or an arm bad enough the worst that could happen to us would be that they would send us home. We couldnt play football on the line. We would have rolled down the mountain. (Besides we had telephone lines to repair during the day which got blown apart again every night. The lines were necessary to call in mortar fire at night on the mortar concentrations we set up during the day.)

No one ever received the slightest scratch in one of our tackle football games. Our season always ended when the C.O. said, No more tackle football. Youre going to get killed out there. (Each of us had heard that from the Regimental Commander when we joined the unit. He always said, Half of you will not be going home, not alive anyway. Thankfully, he was wrong. Our Regiment lost about 1000 G.I.s plus a large number of ROK soldiers that served in our units over the three years of the Korean War. When I was there, the losses were lower than before I got there and after I left.)

The above is called by football commentators a sidelight. I don't like sideline sob stories (or human interest stories) while watching television football any more than you liked the above sidelight.

Anyway, my wife has taken up football. After resisting for 70 years she finally gave in. She cant believe that she now likes football. What I mean is: She has not suited up yet. She likes to watch it on television. Therefore we now talk about the game.

Im usually reading a book or doing a logic puzzle during the game, but she gives it her full attention and she gives me a steady stream of chatter that actually gets me interested in the game.

Today she asked me about penalties and how they are applied. The penalty she was talking about was when Seattle had Carolina on the one yard line. It was a 5-yard procedural penalty. That meant the ball would be put half the distance to the goal. I said, I think that should be an automatic safety. The ball should be placed on the minus 4-yard line. Now I know that the refs probably have not had algebra, so they should just call it a safety.

My wife wanted to know more. I said, suppose you are on your opponents 16 yard line and they get a 15-yard penalty. The ball would be placed on the 1-yard line. Now suppose you are on the 14-yard line under the same circumstances. The ball would be placed half the distance to the goal and you would get the ball on the 7.5-yard line.

Stupid, right? (If I said the ball should be put on the minus 1-yard line, everybody would moan, "That's no way to get a touchdown!")

Heres what should happen in the second instance. The ball is put on the 1-yard line and then half the distance to the goal. You should be on the -yard line. They should give you as many of the penalty yards as possible and then the distance to the goal of whats left. That will always put you on the 1/2-yard line where you belong.

I also would like the fumble rules put back where they belong. The ground cant keep coming up and knocking the ball out of the players hands like that and getting away with it.

Apartment Selection Tips

When you decide to move, apartment selection can be a difficult task. Just how does one go about it properly? There are critical points that renters must bear in mind when they start looking. Let's take a look at some of the key factors that will make your apartment selection a far easier task to endure.

First, in the process of choosing your apartment, you will want to predetermine your monthly budget. If you determine your budget before you begin hunting for an apartment, you will be less apt to waste time viewing apartments that you cannot possibly afford. Therefore, with a budget set, you can begin scouting for apartments within your selected price range.

Next, while on the look out for various apartments, if you have children, you will want to review the various school districts. You can research almost any school district and see what a it has to offer your child by visiting the school district's website. Advertisements that announce available apartments may not reveal the whole story when it comes to leasing an apartment because sadly, advertisement space is restricted. Will you be required to pay additional fees for trash removal? What about wate r- is there a fee you will have to pay that is separate from the rent for water usage? Are the utilities included? Can you get cable television access? What about high-speed Internet? All of these questions can be addressed by the property owner and are questions you should not hesitate to ask. Ultimately, your happiness with a location will depend upon what the site has to offer you in the way of services and amenities.

Real Estate Mortgage Loan: How to Prepare Yourself to Save Money

Besides your credit score and the other five qualifications you must meet to finance a real estate mortgage loan, you need to gather papers and documents. Speed up your financing and make your life easier. Organize your papers into a three-ring binder or file system. You wont need all of the documentation listed below. However, the more information you gather, the more likely you will be to get the best loan rates. Keep in mind that all of these documents may not be needed for all types of loans.

Documentation Required for Real Estate Mortgage Loan

Whether you want to buy your first home or many investment properties to build wealth, this checklist will help you save money on loan costs.

1. Proof of Income

Include copies of your last two pay stubs or other proof of employment and income verification. If you are receiving fixed income like trust income or social security, then include the beneficiary letter stating how much you get.

For self-employed, you will need to prove that you have been in the same line of work or business for two or more years.

If self-employed, show a copy of your business license for two or three years to show you have been in that business for at least two years. If you dont have these, then show whatever you do have to evidence you have been in business for at least two years in the same line or business field. You may also ask a CPA to amend your income tax returns for the previous two years and then write a letter verifying that youve been self-employed for at least two years.

2. Tax returns

Provide tax returns for the last two years or at least the last two years of W2s and/or 1099s if you dont want to disclose tax returns.

If youre self-employed, the mortgage company may require your personal and business tax returns for the previous two years and your companys year-to-date Profit and Loss Statement. If you own a business, you may need a Financial Business Statement prepared by an accountant.

3. Bank account records

Gather your account numbers, address of your bank branch, along with checking and savings account statements for the previous two-to-twelve months. You only need the last two months bank statements in most cases. Most lenders will only need twelve months bank statements when you are trying to get a "full doc" loan (with the best rates) instead of stated income for a self-employed individual. Talk to your loan officer about whether twelve months of bank statements will help you get a better rate.

Include all bank accounts, savings accounts, retirement accounts, and investment accounts. Include any account that you sign for, even if your spouse also signs on the account, and even if your spouse does not apply for the loan with you. Financial assets like these are considered important by lenders as a reserve, particularly now that property values are not rising as quickly.

5. Proof of housing payments

Whether you own or rent, you must document your housing payments. Credit reporting agencies list mortgage payments. Provide copies of your mortgage statements or a copy of your lease agreement with twelve months of checks showing rent payments on time.

If you rent your home from a professional management firm, they can verify that you have paid rent on time. If you rent from a private party, most lenders (though not all) will require you to show canceled rent checks for twelve months.

6. Major assets (other real estate owned, automobiles, boats, antiques, stocks, etc.).

You dont have to include individual stocks if you own shares in a mutual fund or hedge fund. Just provide the latest fund statement. Include vested cash value of whole-life or universal life insurance policy, if any. (Cash value is not the same as the face value. Cash value is what you would get from the insurance company right now, if you surrendered the policy while still alive.) If there are antiques or other collectibles, provide only the total collection value; you dont have to itemize.

7. List of debts (car loans, furniture loans, student loans, and credit cards)

Even though the debts will be on the credit report, you must be aware of all of your debts so that you can tell if the credit report has mistakes. Include any debts that you have co-signed for, like when you co-sign for a childs car.

8. Divorce settlement papers, if applicable, no matter how far back in time

9. Delinquent or inaccurate debts or credit report items

If you paid a collection, judgment or lien (especially a tax lien or other lien against your house), include proof of payment.

10. An irrevocable gift letter if you are receiving a monetary gift from a relative.

11. Purchase agreement (for new purchase).

Provide a copy signed by both parties, including all the signed disclosures.

12. Items needed for a refinance

Furnish copies of your note and deed of trust, home insurance declaration page, copy of your last property tax bill.

13. If you own investment real estate in your name, you need rental leases for each of your properties, plus the items listed in #12 for each of your properties.

14. Bankruptcy

Supply all pages and schedules for any bankruptcy filing within the last seven years, and the discharge sheet, for any type of bankruptcy (Ch 7, Ch 11 or Ch 13). Bankruptcy must be discharged before the date of the loan application.

Talk to your loan officer to see which documents you need to copy and send. Prepare your credit and your real estate mortgage loan documents so you can buy your dream home and even multiple investment properties.

Domestic Cleaning Advice: Computer Cleaning

The computer you use can get pretty dirty sometimes and that might reduce it's performance and reduce it's life time so here is some advice on how you can clean it up.

The computer won't be well cleaned if you'll use alcohol cleaners, you'll need to use a hard surface cleaner, in concentrated solution in warm water.

Cleaning the case

You'll need a cloth that you'll wrung in the solution you chose. Use this cloth to wipe the casing and all the external parts (cabling, keyboard). Make sure you wash the cloth since the soil will be considerable. Excess water shouldn't be used and try not to let water go into the vents of the case. You will be able to clean between the keyboard keys by using damp cloth pushed between the keys with toothpicks.

You'll need to open the case and remove all the dust from it and from the vents. You'll need to be very care full while cleaning inside the case. You can use the vacuum cleaner but be sure the motor is far from the computer and it's components. Also, you should earth yourself by touching any metal object that you know it's earthed, like a radiator.

You should vacuum the vents of the casing and the keyboard. The keyboard is a place where a lot of dust and rubbish collects, the amount might surprise you. Keeping the dust away from the vents of the case and the coolers inside it you'll prevent overheating the computer that leads to damaging the components. Also, it's not a good thing to push the dust out of the computer, it's just going to stay in your room and will eventually get back in the computer

Mouse cleaning

The mouse can be cleaned by removing the ball and dusting inside, remove stray food and human or dog hairs from around the rollers. You'll have to keep the mouse dry, everything has to be scraped out.

That's just a small bit of advice meant to help you keep your computer clean, it's a good thing to get your computer to a professional cleaning service for better cleaning.

The Arrival

To arrive at a certain destination in life is described as a person being a success at what they have accomplished in life. Success is where you can finally get to breathe a little or take a break from all the hard work. It also means to accomplish ones goals, the American dream, to own a house, and to be better off then the previous generation. The question that has been pondered is simply arriving good enough?

As I sit here at my desk as I do every morning I thought to myself I have finally arrived. I have arrived to the destination and place that I am meant to be. Its been a long and hard road, but I am finally a self employed entrepreneur, and I am doing exactly what Ive wanted to do my whole life. Although I didnt really know it and its been a long road to finding this out but fate has finally stepped in. The thoughts of having a home based business enables me to pick and choose my time, to spend more time with the family. Being there at home when the children get out of school and making those doctors appointments. I get to do more with the children then most parents who work outside of the home.

Being self employed I have noticed that I seem to work harder now then ever. It requires discipline, sacrifice, and dedication. Self employment is not the only job out there that requires time but your finances depend on how hard you work. Just how much do you have to sacrifice or give up to finally make your dreams come true?

Most home based businesses or other upper management positions require at least 50-60 hours a week. It requires the ability to put things on hold, especially when you work out of your home. If you have children that are always running in and out it requires the ability to control your emotions and not let them get the best of you. The emotional toll it takes on a person can be quite substantial. Especially being interrupted when you are in your thought process mode and if you break it at that moment you may not get it back.

I remember one of those instances of losing track when my daughter interrupted me one day. She knew I had an aunt that I hadnt seen in a while and she was under the impression that I didnt know where she was at. So while I was busy working she knocked on the door again and in the usual tone of interruption I screamed what! This is when she told me she thought she found my aunt on one of those online databases. When she told me this it brought tears to my eyes as I could tell she was only trying to surprise and make me happy. It was then at that moment when I realized I was working way too hard and I really needed to get my priorities in order.

You miss out on some of the little things in life. For parents that have the younger children you may miss out on all of the firsts. The first tooth, words, crawling, or steps and so on. For the little older you may miss out on teaching them how to read, taking time bathe the dog together, or going for walks. Even more critical are the years right before becoming a teenager, the preteen years. Having the talk with them. Probably the most important talk you will ever have with them in their life. Keeping kids off drugs, premature sex, dating is not something to take lightly. It doesnt stop there because in the years beyond it becomes a reinforcement issue. It is important to go to a few games, watch the ballet, cheerleading, choir, and how about a good old fashion bike ride in the park.

Not taking the time necessary reminds me of a song in the seventys called Cats in the Cradle. I am sure most have heard of it as there has been a remake or two. The father is so busy with his schedule that he had denied several requests from his young son to play ball or to spend some time with him. It didnt seem to bother his son as he was very proud of his father and deemed that he would be just like his father someday. It happened just as he said it would; he did become like his father.

The boy now a man is all grown up with his own family to take care of as well as his own pressures in life. The father whose son has moved away and he is now lonely and wondering what hes been doing. So the father calls him up one day and asked when he would come by. The son denies his request saying the new job is a hassle, the kids have the flu, but at the end of the conversation he says its been great talking to you dad. It occurred to the father his boy had grown up to be exactly like him.

You have heard the saying take time to smell the roses. You better do it quick because once theyre gone they quickly fade into the past. Just the memories last and if there arent any memories made there wont be any to remember. Time is money we all know that but time is something else as well. Time is love, above all else. It is the most precious commodity in the world and should be lavished on those we care about most. (Sidney J. Harris, Money is Time, Clearing the Ground, (1986).

Take the time right now to plan the vacation or if that is stretching it, then stop what your doing right now and go spend some time with that child or give the other person in your life a hug. Thats what I am going to do after I come up with a fantastic ending to this article. Gotcha! I already had the ending in mind before I wrote it. The way I see it is that it just isnt good enough to simply arrive, but rather if you enjoyed the ride.

It Looked Pretty Good to Me: Junk In! Junk Out! It May not be as Sweet and Full of Flavor as You Thi

Don't fiddle with the characteristics of a best-selling existing product. Remember that a few years a go the owner of the "most valuble" trade name in the World changed the taste of their "battleship" cola. They did it after much testing and trials by consumer groups. But when they put it on the market, their customers didn't give one hoot about all of their thinking and testing. They took one sip and said, "What in all hell is this?" The company had to rename their classic cola to get their customers back. The new cola never took hold. After a company has been in business for many years, the idea to change an existing brand often comes from new employees. They use their testing results to overcome the objections of the old hands that know better. Watch out! Read on from my experience.

As bad as things were during the depression, some businesses struggled along and stayed in business. Of those that survived, not a few made a bundle during WWII. One company in my home town made stoves for army barracks. The owner became a millionaire in just a couple of years.

In my neighborhood, on the wrong side of the tracks, near the state fairgrounds, there was a small popcorn company. The main product was called something like Krispat. I don't remember how the name of the product was spelled, even though I must have eaten a zillion of the things.

This small company blossomed when the army decided to turn the fairgrounds into an army training camp. We kids loved the obstacle course and we could zip over it about twice as fast as the recruits being trained. After and during all this training, the family that owned the popcorn factory made sure the product was near the noses of the G.I.s and they sold thousands of "Krispats."

At the end of the war, the company was well-positioned and had a large clientele of retail outlets for their products. However, the owners moved to Hawaii and decided to sell the business. A gentleman bought the business and things went well. My mother, my sisters, and half the women in our neighborhood worked there at one time or another. I worked there too. I was dressed as a clown and dumped at the junction of three roads up a canyon east of the city. On weekends it was very busy. I would wave my popcorn at the cars and many of them stopped. At the end of the day when I was picked up, I would be out of product.

Well, the "Krispat" was a yummy thing. I used to watch them make them in the factory. The popcorn was mixed with a wonderful caramel syrup, then pressed into hockey-puck-sized discs which came down a conveyor belt. The girls and women on both sides of the belt grabbed about four of those disk and pressed them together into a role. Each roll was placed in an easily recognizable paper wrapper that said, "YUMMY!" These were placed in cartons ready for shipment.

Then the business went Kaput over night!

The new owner had bought some crummy-tasting syrup at a low cost. As soon as I tasted the product, I knew he was in trouble.

And I was an "expert" on what happened and I knew what to do about it.

After the war, a company which an older friend of mine invested in (and worked in too) went Kaput! It was a soft drink company with an excellent product. One of the major stockholders got a bargain on some syrup. It ruined the flavor. He wouldn't get rid of the junk. The company went bankrupt.

That is exactly what happened to the popcorn company. I was only a teenager, but I warned the owner. I begged him to get rid of the crummy-tasting caramel syrup he had bought at a bargain. But the poor man ran out of money before he decided that he would have to change the syrup to survive. It made me so sad to see a company go under that I thought was a model for my future in business. The owner couldn't keep from going under: BLUB! BLUB! BLUB!

Touchdown Football Party

Football is the all American sport. We watch it on Saturdays for college, pros all day on Sunday and Monday night and we spend Thursdays and Fridays covering school football events! Incorporate football into a celebration for a birthday, homecoming or special event.

Send out invitations shaped like footballs. The party planning store will have those and other football motifs to choose from. Make your guests wear football jerseys of their favorite team whether it is pro, college or whatever. Face paint and other fanatical displays are optional.

You can have the first game be who comes dressed with the most spirit. Come up with a prize for the person who has the most face paint on or the most original show of spirit. They are wearing a cheese head? Give them a gift certificate to a pizza shop. They are wearing a dress and heels and rooting for a pig team? Send them to a BBQ place. Have fun and be creative with the prizes.

Football parties need food, especially if the TV will be on all day. Make the menu finger food that is easy to snack on all day without being refrigerated. Have guests bring their favorite bag of chips to share and you provide the dips. The football party can also include alcohol, but use with only age appropriate adults.

Decorations can be minimal, since the focus will be on the game. Some wall hangings of your favorite teams or banners can add to the fun of the event. Mini-footballs to throw around at halftime can be fun too. All the paper products and favors can be found with the assistance of a party planner at a party supply store. They will be more than happy to assist you with all of your party needs!
